Abolitionist Assembly

This will be DMC's first public meeting. The goals are to encourage conversation about abolition and envision abolitionist practices within our community.

The discussion will begin with a look at the history of slavery and the concept of prison abolition. We will discuss how abolition fits into our community and the tangible tasks each of us can take on to propel our world to being one where:
- we are continuously struggling to dismantle racism and promote equity, equality and inclusion
- social, economic and politcal problems are dealt with outside systems of incarceration and oppression
- all people have the ability to contribute to their communuity in a meaningful way

Everyone is welcome at the meeting. People who have been incarcerated or people who have friends/family locked up are especially invited to attend and participate. Politicians may attend and are encouraged to use the meeting as an opportunity to listen.

Indy10 Community Meeting: Divest from Jails, Invest in People

At this event, the No New Jail Coalition will present its reasons for opposing Mayor Hogsett's proposed $650 million 'justice campus' project, and on alternative uses of that money that would help poor communities in Indianapolis, including schools, food access, community control of development, and mental healthcare.

The reasoning behind the expansion of the prison system represented by Hogsett's proposal will also be debunked, and alternative solutions to the problem of jail over crowding discussed.

The purpose of the event is to inform Indianapolis community members of the threats posed by the new jail, and to recruit people to help us stop it and divert the funding into projects that are beneficial to our communities.
